About

I work with materials that have a defining hardness and exist in continuous performance before, during, and after the conception of “the object.” Glass, ceramics, and metals exist in between phases and reach their variable hardnesses in extremes. One must enact the extremes of force and heat upon them; intense pressure or gentle movement. I acknowledge and stray from practiced reality. I accept what I think of as objective truth and rewrite this notion as a new truth of process. I am interested in the moment that material becomes object; when loose pigment is transformed into metal, when powder hardens into glass. Through my work, I discover and create the poetic or chemical agent that catalyzes this moment. I create situations in which materials can act as themselves, beyond my touch. In my practice, I seek to create an experience that cultivates belief. Each object is affected intimately by the actions I impose upon it, whether that be poetry spoken to the material while it transforms or the food consumed while making. Within this thinking, I create a methodology vital to the creation of sculptures that hold evidence of their “past life”—their making.
